Do You Need a Gas Certificate of Compliance in South Africa?

If you have an LP gas installation at your home or business, you have probably heard the term "Certificate of Compliance", or CoC. Here is what it is, why it matters, and when you need one.

What is a Gas Certificate of Compliance?

A Certificate of Compliance is a document issued by a registered gas installer confirming that your gas installation was done safely and meets the South African standard, SANS 10087. It records that the pipework, regulators, cylinders and appliance connections were installed correctly and pressure tested.

Do I need one?

Yes. In South Africa a Certificate of Compliance is legally required for gas installations. A new installation should be issued one when the job is completed, and an installation that has been changed or extended needs a new one.

Why it matters

  • Safety: The certificate shows the installation was tested and is safe to use. Most gas incidents come from poor or non-compliant installations.
  • Insurance: Insurers can ask for proof that your gas installation is compliant, especially after a claim.
  • Selling your property: Buyers and conveyancers commonly ask for a gas CoC when a property with a gas installation is sold.
  • Business premises: Restaurants, hotels, schools and other commercial sites are expected to hold valid certificates for their gas systems.

What happens during the inspection?

A registered installer checks the pipework, joints, regulators and cylinder placement, confirms ventilation, tests the system for leaks and checks that each appliance is connected and working safely. If something is not compliant, it has to be corrected before the certificate can be issued.

How long does a certificate stay valid?

A certificate reflects the installation on the day it was issued. If the installation is altered, extended, or you add appliances, a new certificate is needed. We also recommend a regular safety inspection: annually for homes, and every 6 to 12 months for commercial and industrial sites, depending on usage and insurance requirements.
